Outdoor patio furniture revival

Earlier this month, I shared some tips on spring cleaning your (indoor) furniture. Now that the sun’s out, it’s time — well, almost… I can tan in my coat, right? — to throw off the winter covers and enjoy our patios again! Who’s ready to suck up some vitamin D and mojitos in style? Before you do that though, inspect your outdoor furniture to see if it emerged from the winter cold unscathed. Here are two main things to look for:
Damaged cushions
If you forgot to bring your outdoor cushions inside this winter, there’s a good chance they’ve started to breakdown and lose their "loft" and springy-ness. Outdoor cushions are made of a large cell foam, which easily drains moisture. This helps them last through those summer rains but isn’t designed for freezing temperatures. If your frozen cushions were also compressed, the large cells in the foam will break down as the temperature warms up. This means flat, uncomfortable cushions are in your future.
Pro tip: If you’re replacing or remaking your outdoor cushions, the best place to go is a marine re-upholstery company! (That’s a re-upholstery company that specializes in “marine” vehicles, i.e., boats.)
Drying, cracking plastic
Before you sit down — I repeat, BEFORE you sit down — check every inch of plastic that makes up your outdoor furniture. Visually, look for any cracks or damage. Then, physically move it around (gently, of course) to ensure it’s still pliable and flexible. If any bit of it is rigid and brittle, you risk falling through the seat the first time you sit down! (Hence my initial warning.)
Time to shop
Now that you’ve checked all your furniture, it’s time to replace what’s broken (hopefully, nothing is though) and accessorize with some fresh new pieces from brands’ 2025 summer collections! There are many fantastic rug and throw pillows designed specifically for outdoor use that look like they belong in your living room. Plus, it’s always fun to add a few trendy accessories that brighten up your patio.
